16th December 2020 – Mental Health Awareness
Following an approach from some Brethren Bro. Bill Perry PGM has asked Bro. Jack Alexander to put together a small group of Brethren who have agreed to get involved with any of our Brethren who are concerned about isolation or issues surrounding mental health during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Below is a communication which has been prepared by Bro. Alexander and communicated to Lodge Secretaries for forwarding to the Lodge Almoner or any other Brother in the Lodge who has a particularly interest in this area, or may be more able to deal with these matters with a Brother who they would have contact with in this position.
This group had the full backing of PGM Bill Perry to provide support and help to any of the Brethern who are finding situations difficult during this terrible pandemic
Communication from Brother Jack Alexander
Dear Sir & Brother Almoner,
I hope this email finds you and your family safe and well.
Brethren due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, we are all very much aware of the serious affects on our Physical Health/Wellbeing this has a direct result of contacting the COVID 19 virus.
You may also be aware that due to the resulting major changes to our lifestyles, and for us as Freemasons, not being able to attend our Lodge Meetings is most certainly one of these changes, and this Brethren can have a detrimental and lasting effect on our Mental Health.
Our PGM Brother Bill Perry asked me to form a small group to explore ways that we as a Province can help to lessen the chances of Brethren suffering a deterioration in their Mental Health.
Particularly vulnerable are Brethren who, for whatever reason live on their own, and bearing in mind some of these Brethren were out most nights of the week in the company of other Brethren attending meetings and generally socialising with others.
The reason I have been asked to carry out this task is that I worked for 12 years with Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health (LAMH) and on retiring became a Director with the organisation and still work with them on a voluntary basis. Also on the group are Brother Iain Reid PM of Lodge Coltswood No 1067 and Sam Howie PM of Lodge Dura No 1513.
From the outset Brethren I would like to inform you that this group is not being formed to carry out the work of, or to replace Lodge Almoners, but rather as being a source of support for Lodge Almoners with a view to Mental Health. Brother Ian McGowan our PGL Almoner is also aware of and being kept up to date with the groups.
I would like to inform you that the group has only had one Zoom meeting, and whilst we are at the early stages of planning the support we aim to provide; it is hoped that we will be able to provide some level of support in the next week or two, which will obviously depend on the current level of restrictions in force at the time.
Below is a list of what type of support we are thinking about providing:
• Presentations on Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Awareness to Lodge Almoners/Masters
• Source of up-to-date information – including increased use of Social media
• Coffee Chat Shops
• Walking groups – fresh air and a blether
• Or simply someone to have a blether with
Also from the outset it must be stressed that no clinical support will be provided as we are neither Clinicians nor Counsellors, however sources of information will include contact information of organisations/statutory services where people can seek professional help if required.
Finally, Brethren it is intended that the group will have a name although we are still working on that.
However can I leave you with a couple of thoughts:
• Remember Busby from the British Telecom adverts – “its good to talk”
• Remember the old proverb – a problem shared is a problem halved.
I will update you on the progress of the group and certainly when support is available.
Stay Safe Brethren
Bro. Jack Alexander

10th December 2020 – Grand Almoner Communication 2020
This would usually be read in full at Annual Installations, a first address as Grand Almoner by Bro. Tom Davidson
Last November, when I was installed as Grand Almoner, little did I suspect the immensely challenging and worrying times that lay ahead for us all. I hope you and your families have remained safe and well during the Pandemic.
Looking back to last year, when we were able to attend meetings and to deal with our Masonic business in the traditional way, I don’t think that any of us could have predicted the COVID-19 Pandemic, and certainly not the impact which it has had on all our lives and on the Craft.
Whilst we await approval to resume our meetings, and, of course, this letter will therefore not be able to be read in open Lodge in the usual way, I wanted to communicate with you to keep in touch.
I also wanted to highlight the excellent work which is being undertaken throughout the Scottish Constitution to provide direct support and in terms of working with other local community organisations which are helping vulnerable and needy people to cope during the unprecedented circumstances resulting from the Pandemic.
I had the privilege of reviewing the applications for almost one hundred projects worldwide to access funding from the COVID-19 Challenge Appeal and of learning about the diverse and meaningful projects being organised by Brethren, some projects literally providing a lifeline in local communities.
I was also pleased to note the information on projects being shared on the “Scottish Constitution Freemasonry Supports” Facebook page. It is often difficult to find positives at times of adversity but there is no doubt that the generosity, both financially and by deed, of Scottish Freemasons worldwide is something of which to be proud – when the Pandemic comes to an end I feel sure that we will have strengthened our links within our communities as a result of our actions.
I know that in some regions of the world Brethren are also having to deal with very difficult circumstances as well as with the Pandemic and Grand Lodge will try to provide whatever assistance is possible to those affected.
Many of you will, I am sure, be aware of the extremely challenging circumstances which COVID-19 has presented in Care Homes, where the age and health of the Residents mean that they are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the virus. I am pleased and relieved to advise that the Masonic Homes have remained free of the virus and I commend our Staff for their dedication and care.
Whilst we are all living through testing times, the benevolence and charity work of Grand Lodge continues to support Brethren in need and respond to emergencies.
I thank you most sincerely for your ongoing support – the charitable work of our Craft would quite simply not be possible without such support”.
Thomas Davidson,
Grand Almoner.

11th September 2020 – Latest Update From The Grand Master Mason

Brethren,
Further to my Update this morning, the following general advice has now been released from the Government which answers the question about allowing non-Masonic bodies to use Lodge premises. As can be seen below, this cannot now happen given the 6-person limit that becomes law from Monday. There is no likelihood of that being lifted soon albeit it will be reviewed on 5th October. The reference to public spaces would include Lodge premises where non-Masonic groups meet.
The following excerpt from the Government release states –
This deteriorating situation at home and abroad means that we have to take a very cautious approach to the further easing of restrictions. As set out below, we now need to delay further changes until it is safe to make them. We also need to make some changes that will reduce opportunities for the virus to spread. We have already put a range of extra measures in place to help keep the virus suppressed, our Test & Protect system and outbreak management approach have worked well, and we are today introducing our proximity app, Protect Scotland, which will support our Test and Protect system, but more measures are now required.
At this review point we will take the following steps to further reduce transmission of the virus: The limit on the number of people who can meet socially indoors or outdoors will be reduced to a maximum of six people, and they should come from no more than two households. This applies in people’s homes and gardens as well as in hospitality and public spaces such as parks. It is not required to count children under 12, from within the two households, within the 6-person limit. The regulations and guidance will be updated to reflect these changes.
• Face coverings will be mandated for customers and staff in indoor hospitality. There will be an exemption for when customers are eating and drinking. Staff in non-public facing roles, such as kitchen staff, will also be exempt where face coverings may present health and safety issues due to the nature of roles. Exemptions for vulnerable groups/individuals will also apply to hospitality settings. Regulations will the take effect on Monday 14 September.
Given the developing status of the epidemic – both in Scotland and internationally – we will also continue to take a cautious approach to any further opening up of economic or social activity.
As was noted at the 20th August review when setting the 14th September indicative date. It must be stressed that this indicative date is conditional on continued progress in suppressing the virus.
If the epidemic in Scotland deteriorates before this date, then the expectation must be that the date will be delayed.
Consistent with this, given the deterioration in the status of the epidemic over the past three weeks, those changes that were previously given an indicative date of 14 September will now be assigned a new indicative date of 5 October.
Could I also suggest that you give some consideration to using the new proximity app on your phones – it is easy to download by going into the App Store on your phone and searching for – Protect Scotland – thereafter follow the instructions.
Many thanks.

2nd September 2020 – Vandals Target Marcus Humphrey House

See update for the GMM Ramsay McGhee, please help if you can Brethren

Brethren
It is with sadness that I have to report that vandals broke into the grounds of Marcus Humphrey House last night and wreaked havoc smashing garden furniture and ornaments all of which give the residents much pleasure.
The report I have received from the Home would indicate that all the decorative pots (10) have been smashed and there were lots of stone and ceramic ornaments of woodland animals, toadstools, birds etc. (some of which were gifted) which the Residents liked to look at which have all been damaged.
Could I appeal to any of the Lodges that if you have or have access to such pots and ornaments and they are surplus to requirements, that you could maybe arrange to have them dropped off at the Home.
Many thanks
Ramsay McGhee

Sunday 10th May 2920 – Update for PGL Sect. William Craig
Brethren , I trust that you and yours are all well and staying free from the effects of this terrible virus and that we will soon be able to meet again in the normal manner.
In the meantime I am probably stating the obvious, but have to confirm that the Finance Committee meeting scheduled for this Tuesday (12th May) and the General Committee meeting the following Tuesday (19th May) have both been cancelled.
The Regular Communication due to be held on Friday 5th June is also postponed until the social distancing restrictions are relaxed in which case further advice will be given.
As you may know it is the intention of the GMM Bro. Ramsay McGhee to hold a memorial Service in Grand Lodge at some point in the future and has asked for Lodges to keep details of any Brother who has passed away as a result of the pandemic. Could I ask the Lodge Secretaries to keep the details of these Brethren so that they can be remembered at that time in the minutes of your Lodge and in the meantime send me details of any Brother to enable me to keep a record of all the Brethren in this Province who have died as a result of the virus or where the virus has been shown as contributory factor.
Please keep safe and well .
Regards
Willie

2nd April 2020 – Message from the Grand Chaplain of The Grand Lodge of Scotland
Brethren.
I write to you as we embark on a difficult journey for our nation and the world as we face the coronavirus. This virus is devastating our world and nation and a battle is going on to fight this pandemic. The battle is serious and there is much doom and gloom being reported. It seems almost alien for us to be a parted from those we love, from families and friends, from our brothers whom we love dearly. Shops shelves are empty and social distancing is vital. It all seems very doom and gloom with a dark future ahead.
However, it is important to realise that good things are going on. Communities are helping each other and neighbours show concern for neighbours.
A spirit of encouragement is appearing and a willingness to win the fight against this virus. In the windows of homes there are appearing rainbows and the word “Hope” as a sign of encouragement to others.
I want to ask you to enter into that spirit of hope. The Craft reminds us that our Hope is in the Great Architect of The Universe and the motto of The Grand Lodge of Scotland is “In the Lord is All our Trust”. I urge you to hold on to that motto. In our rituals we learn much of how the prophets and the great King Solomon put their trust in God and they were delivered. I urge you to do the same.
We sing the great hymns “Courage, brother do not stumble…trust in God” and I invite you to reread the words we sing and take them to your heart. This is an opportunity for us to recall the basis of our Craft founded on the principles of brotherly love, benevolence and truth and to recall that as our forefathers of old found hope in God we too should do the same. The symbol we should be putting in our windows is the letter “G” reminding us from whom our help comes.
Our ritual reminds us that we come from darkness to light. These are dark days but as we recall that we desire light more than anything else let us not forget that the blessing of light will come. The darkest night comes before the dawn.
The hymn “Lead, kindly Light” reminds us that when we search for the Light it can be found and we hope and pray that shafts of light may soon penetrate the darkness of these days. It is my hope and prayer that we shall emerge from this darkness stronger.
I urge you to follow our principles, trust in The Most High God, seek good to all men and look after each other. My prayer for you as I hope yours is for me is:
May the Light of God surround you
The Love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you.
I am,
Yours fraternally
The Revd Dr Angus Kerr, B.D.,Cert.Min.,Th.M.,D.Min
The Grand Chaplain
31st March 2020 – Update By PGL Almoner Bro. Ian McGown

Brethren.

I hope you and your families are well and that you are managing to get through the difficult times we find ourselves in.

Along with the PGM and Provincial Secretary , I have been in contact with a number of Brethren throughout the Province and to date, there appears to be no adverse reports from the Lodges as to the health and well being of brethren or their loved ones.

I am aware of the tremendous job that the Lodge Secretaries and Almoners are doing to keep in touch with members of their respective Lodges and my thanks goes to them for their support.

Wherever possible I would ask all brethren to keep in contact with other brethren, particularly those who live on their own or do not keep the best of health.

It’s amazing what a wee phone call or text can do for people at this time.

Thank you again and please stay safe.

Yours faithfully and fraternally

Ian McGown

17th March 2020 – Important Information on the Suspension of ALL Masonic Activities by The Grand Lodge of Scotland

Following the latest directive from Grand Lodge, which is attached,  it is with regret that I have cancelled the Annual Divine Service of Provincial Grand Lodge which was to be held on the 26th April.

Unfortunately, I also have to announce that for obvious reasons, our Caravan at Monkton will remain closed until further notice. Those Brethren who have already booked a holiday at the Caravan will be advised separately via their Lodge Secretaries.

It is also important that if you fall ill over the coming days or weeks that you contact you Lodge Almoner or PGL Almoner in order that we can ensure that you are being looked after or require any support.

Stay safe Brethren, look out for others, take care and heed all advice.

14th March 2020 – Update from PGL of Lanarkshire Middle Ward on Communications on Coronavirus

Dear Brother Secretary, both P.G.M. Bro. Perry and myself have been receiving requests from members seeking guidance on whether or not to cancel Lodge meetings. We have been hoping that some further guidance would come from Grand Lodge and cannot instruct Lodges what to do until GL do so.

However in the meantime the position is that a number of Lodges have already intimated that they have cancelled all meetings for next few months. In some cases this includes P.G.L. official visitations which have not yet taken place and which we can deal with at a later time if required. It is now a matter for each Lodge to take a decision on what to do.

If your Lodge decides to cancel any meeting/s please advise me as well as posting on Social media etc.

If your Lodge is one which has still to have the Official Visit from P.G.L. and decide to cancel the meeting please advise both the Office Bearer heading the visit and myself.

Yours F. and F.

2nd March 2020 – Memo from The Grand Master Mason on Corona Virus Good Practice

Brethren,

I have received several queries about cancelling Lodge meetings as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus situation.

At the time of writing, a total of 7,690 people have been tested in the UK, of which 7,675 were confirmed negative and 15 positives. None of those cases have been in Scotland but it is almost inevitable that it will appear in Scotland at some point – the UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the public from low to moderate.

The Department of Health and Social Care will be publishing updated data every day at 2pm until further notice so we can keep abreast of developments.  The NHS Inform link also has the latest advice https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19.

In the meantime, I would urge everyone to take the precautionary measures outlined by the Health Boards at all Masonic meetings and whilst on Masonic business

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze –
  • put used tissues in the bin immediately –
  • wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available –
  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell –
  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If anyone in any Lodge is diagnosed with the virus, I would advise that the Lodge should immediately cancel all meetings until such time as the local health officials have indicated that it is safe to do so.

Common sense should prevail at all times – take no chances – observe the precautionary measures at all times.

If in any doubt, please contact Grand Lodge for further advice.

W RAMSAY MCGHEE

14th February 2020 – Scottish Freemasonry Survey 2020 – Communication from Grand Master Mason
Please assist in the information gathering where you can BrethrenGMM Portrate

I am delighted to share details of the first ever membership survey undertaken by the Grand Lodge of Scotland. I have every confidence that your participation in this process and that of the Brethren in your District or Province will help inform our strategic thinking as we shape our organisation for the future. The survey has been designed for ease of access, and should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

Please be assured that the survey is entirely anonymous, and I would encourage all respondents to be open and honest with their answers. We are seeking to pool the collective insight and experience of our global membership, and the ultimate value of the survey output will directly correlate to the candour of your responses.

The survey can be accessed using the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/scottishmasonicsurvey2020

The survey is now live and will be open until the end of April. We shall collate the results and produce a report which we plan to share in the autumn. Should you have any questions during the period the survey is live, please email [email protected] with the word SURVEY in the subject.

Please distribute this link to all Lodge secretaries in your District/Province and encourage all members to actively engage with this project.

Thank you for your participation in this exciting initiative.

Yours sincerely and fraternally

W Ramsay McGhee
Grand Master Mason
